that garage closed a while ago i think.....
the space is an old garage/studio space.....
big enough to fit A SHITLOAD OF HEADS!
if you've ever been to the Hosiery parties - it's the same location
the goal is to have a "Paradise Garage" type feel for this party - (for you kids on here that don't know what the paradise garage was, go do your homework - you should know your history!)
Anyways - the Ken (ECB) & Chris Burns are the peeps responsible for putting this together - the focus on the lineup was local talent that has really proven themselves worthy to play for an event of this nature. They didn't want to book huge out-of-town names - this party is about DC - Trust me, the music is gonna be fucking sick.
there is talk of some serious old school shenanigans being planned for this - so if you're gonna be in the area for NYE, this is the place to be.
think about the $$$$ you'll save by not going to a bar/club!
seriously though, the money shouldn't be what drives you to check this party out - when was the last time you went to a REAL warehouse party IN DC, ON NYE - that lasted all nighy and WELL into the next day???
i'm so pumped about this the hair is standing up on the back of my neck

The band Rush has a million releases, too, but their sound is like nails on a chalk board for me. So that list does nothing for me. I know Graham appreciates quality music, so I'm not too worried about the quality, I'm just curious as to the style ALL of these folks are playing.

AGFA = breakbeat funk, funky House, old school Hip Hop and more!

Rest assured...all the music this night will be top notch. Graham has very good taste in music.....
East Coast Boogiemen play deep, disco, funky house. Juan and Ken have really helped establish and popularize the underground house sound. Juan is also my favorite dj, hands down. Man is magic behind the decks....maybe a douchepump in person- but djing he is the man. (and I dont go buttsharkin djs- but I def have a dj man crush on him)
AGFA are a little harder to describe. They play funk. Everything from house to old school breaks but first and foremost FUNK. They are def unique.
Joe L. and Keenan are some of the most talented local djs in the region. These guys always impress me.
I think this sounds like a great party.

LOL I haven't heard Tim play in awhile, but he plays everything from DnB to house..
as for everyone else...... they play on the real deep side of house. Chris Burns has been solid and really making a name for himself in DC, he plays deep house and disco. This party is basically for the house heads and the people who can appreciate the roots of house, ie. Funk, disco, bboy breaks, etc....
Just warning peeps now... don't expect any fluffy trance or other BS.

Joe,
I almost threw a party at this space (didn't due to booking conflict) so I am familiar with it. Re the legality: I do not know first hand because I do not rent, but I know that my friends rent from it and do pay, and it is legit. They have thrown parties there in the past with live bands, I have attended several, never any problems. There are apartment buildings across the street but you cannot hear anything from the street.
here are photos I took with my cell phone... not sure which rooms are open for this party

New to the DC scene as of a year and a half ago, but doing my part to help grew the techno side of things around here with 88. Started in the Detroit techno scene almost 13 years ago, though. And besides techno, me loves me some good house!

Friends,
This space is 100% legit. The auto body garage you are referring to is beneath this complex and does not encompass the massive studios and spaces above it. The space we are using for this party is signed on a lease, and the party is being thrown with the person/landlord who is responsible for said lease. Here is a picture set from the party we threw 2 weeks ago that drew 500+ people:
http://www.brightestyoungthings.com/caughtintheflash/photos-gold-leaf-party-warehouse/
http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2330/2086075144_e51c28b6f4.jpg
We will be using both rooms and if you want to check it out before New Years, definitely come see me play this SATURDAY night from 11pm - ?. However it must be noted that the sound system for NYE will be completely different from what is being used now.
For those who are not familiar with me, I have been in D.C. for a year and a half and am most known for my "Disco City" party which emphasizes underground disco, boogie, classic house, funk, soul, quality music. I also used to run the bookings and had a weekly at the now defunct Selam on U street, among other bookings and guest spots at parties around the city.
If you want to check out my sound, here is a deep house mix I did for Morgan State Radio in early October:

That's some serious VOCAL house, but faaaaaaaaaaaaaar from being DEEP house. Not a big fan of a house set based on vocal tracks.... Deep house takes me deep inside and moves my body. Too many vocals is a distraction, especially if it's EVERY track.
Listening to the next set now... kinda funky to start with... I likey funk.

I'm always up to criticism, but your opinion of what is deep is pretty narrow. It's also somewhat apparent you didn't listen to the mix because its hardly all vocal.
I hope you enjoy the second mix.

dudes and dudettes....
i finally saw the space in action on saturday after 'X' and pulse were over.
all i can say is WOW! the place had over 500 heads and it was disgusting outside - impressive crowd to say the least - everyone had a smile on their face - music was incredible - dance floor was killer - bathroom situation wasn't bad at all - the place was going bonkers at 3:45AM (and this was just a random sat. night party)
anyone worried about the music selection for the evening should seriously snap out of it! the lineup is very diverse and everyone playing is playing because they deserve to - you won't be disappointed (unless you belong at glow - hehehe)
THIS IS GONNA BE THE BEST NYE OF THE NEW MILLENNIUM

WashingtonPost article about Disco in DC... featuring Chris Burns and DJ Mandrill
Dance Dance Evolution
Disco Never Died; It Just Went Back Underground. Now, a New Generation of Music Lovers Embraces the Beat.
By Dan Zak
Washington Post Staff Writer
Sunday, December 16, 2007; N01
When "Saturday Night Fever" thrust its hips into America 30 years ago today, disco had already detonated in Washington. Dance palaces lined the streets of Georgetown, downtown and the strip off South Capitol Street. Within a year the sequin-spangled fallout had blanketed the suburbs.
In many ways disco was a uniter. It was continuous dancing to continuous music, a concept that bloomed during the '70s, when people needed a driving, positive sound to blot out the malaise and discord in the world. It also meant different things to different people. One person's disco track could be another's funk. Or boogie. Or soul. Or house, which is what disco evolved into in the '80s.
"It had its R&B side, it had its jazz side, it had even a classical side," says Frederick resident Bernard Lopez, proprietor of DiscoMusic.com. "It was a white thing, it was a black thing, it was a Hispanic thing. It was a wonderful melting pot of different types of music. Where else could you hear violins and congas in one song?"
At the end of '77, John Travolta and the Bee Gees touched off the mainstreaming, commercialization and, ultimately, the bastardization of disco. It got too big too fast. Eventually everyone was in on it, which meant no one was in on it. All of a sudden people were burning disco records, and the sensation became a punch line that remains punchy to this day.
Disco mania bit the dust in the early '80s, but disco itself (and its dance culture)
went back underground, where it started and where it lives on. Even here. Today. Disco is alive, in many ways and forms, from DJ booths in Dupont Circle and Northeast Washington to a
retro cover band in Adams Morgan to a hustle school in Fairfax County. To explore these finds, turn to Page 4.
ON THE DANCE FLOOR: Never Can Say Goodbye
Every Monday night, a discotheque erupts in a second-floor dance studio just outside the Capital Beltway in Fairfax. At 9 p.m., the fluorescent lights blink out and colored spotlights pop on. Disco balls rotate and "Fly Robin Fly" comes on.
And people dance the hustle. ( Do it.)
The first lady of hustle, Joyce Szili, 55, teaches it for beginners at 7:30 and intermediate dancers at 8:15. ( Do it.)
Then the experts -- the people who danced it on the D.C. club scene during discomania -- glide onto the floor. ( Do do do doo-doo doo-doo do do, do do do doo-doo doo-doo do do.)
People drive from Richmond and Baltimore to do this.
Szili got her first whiff of the hustle in 1974 at Zanzibar, a club above a carwash on L Street NW. Out-of-towners brought the partner dance down from New York, where it was refined in the Hispanic community as a reaction to the mambo. The 1975 song "The Hustle," by the District's own Van McCoy, jump-started the line-dance version. Washingtonians dressed up and club-hopped, searching for that precise riff, that perfect vibe, the ideal moment to show off. There were hustle contests nearly every night.
Fairfax resident David Nyce won plenty of them. Now 53, he's a regular at Szili's Monday Night Hustle, where the vibe is both a virtual wormhole into the past and an affirmation of disco's durability and accessibility.
"There's always been an underground," Nyce says. "It's hard to let go of something you enjoy." As for mainstream perceptions, he makes one thing clear: "To me, disco is not 'Y.M.C.A.' I hate that with a passion. I like the idea of disco, the dance version."
The dance aspect draws in a generation that didn't even live it. Arlington residents Chuck Daniel, 29, and Katsumi Saito, 30, dropped into the beginner hustle class last month on a whim, looking to branch out from their regular salsa lessons.
"I enjoy dancing in clubs, and I'm trying to get away from freestyle and incorporate actual steps," Daniel says. "I like that we're starting with turns. In our salsa class, it took us two weeks to actually start moving."
Until nearly midnight, the place moves. The vinyl spins. So do the dancers. Everyone is partnered up, leading and following themselves into a whirl. They never stop smiling.
Monday Night Hustle. Mondays. Basic hustle at 7:30 p.m., intermediate at 8:15, open dance 9-11:30. Elan DanceSport Center, 8442 Lee Hwy., Fairfax. Lessons and dance $15, dance only $8 (includes refreshments). 301-946-2080, http://www.justhustle.com.
Saturday Night Fever (also organized by Joyce Szili). First Saturday of the month. Dance instruction 8-9 p.m., open dance 9-midnight. Rendezvous, 11910 Parklawn Dr., Rockville. Lesson and dance $15, dance only $12 (includes refreshments). 301-468-2582, http://www.dance 911.com.
IN THE BOOTH: For Love of the Music
Chris Burns, 24, goes record digging once a week at yard sales, libraries and flea markets. Under the name Disco City, he spins vinyl once a month at the Rock and Roll Hotel on H Street NE. To the sounds of such disco-era artists as David Joseph and Marta Acuna, 20-somethings form dance circles in a narrow space not intended for such activity. Last weekend one guy actually struck a Travolta pose, a mainstream exclamation point to an underground sound -- the sound Burns prefers.
"It's a little bit rougher, a little more left field; I would say it's a lot more soulful," he says. "Don't get me wrong: Donna Summer is a great, great vocalist. That's great music, but KC and the Sunshine Band is poppy and flowery. It doesn't touch you somewhere."
Burns bought his first turntable while growing up in Silver Spring, joined a DJ club at Colgate University in New York state, discovered classic disco and Chicago house, and started going to Club Shelter in Greenwich Village, where he tasted the kind of dance-floor nirvana created by quality music, a superb DJ and a crowd both willing and able to lose itself in the beat.
"Oh, man, it's coming back now," Burns says about disco. "It's a new generation of DJs just discovering great music. It's the thrill of the hunt in finding these records. And when you find that gem and the hair stands up on the back of your neck, there's nothing like it."
Burns, who lives near Meridian Hill Park in Northwest, found one such gem recently in Philadelphia: Joseph's "You Can't Hide (Your Love From Me)," remixed in 1983 by Larry Levan, the marquee DJ at the Paradise Garage in New York from '77 to '87. Haven't heard of Joseph or Levan? That's why it's underground.
" This music -- I feel it inside of me, if that makes sense," Burns says. "I react to it so strongly. . . . I'm trying to find these great records and put them in a context that is meaningful to myself. It's almost like a classical violinist studying Mozart."
If Burns is the scholar, then Daryll Harris is the professor. He has gone by the name DJ Mandrill since his days spinning at the Clubhouse, a renovated warehouse on Upshur Street NW open from '75 to '90. The Clubhouse was liquorless, open only to members (there were 4,000 during discomania) yet home to people of all races, sexual orientations and backgrounds. It opened at 12:30 a.m. and closed eight hours later.
"There were clubs in Washington then like there are bars in Washington now," remembers Harris, 49, who lives in Hyattsville. "There were clubs on every corner. In that era, disco was what you did." Case in point: Harris spun a lunchtime disco set every day from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at L.A. Cafe (now Club Five) for a packed dance floor.
In this era, Harris is still in a DJ booth. Every week, he pulls a batch of 300 records from his stock of 65,000 and hosts Sunday Soir¿e at the Fab Lounge in Dupont Circle. He drops the vocals of Sylvester into the beat of the Weather Girls, bleeds early Sting into Miquifaye vs. Kung Fu and samples the Trammps and Raze. This decades-spanning set brings him to an important point:
"The term 'disco' is going to be relative to who you're talking to," he says. "It's going to be a cultural thing, a racial thing, even a gender or sexual orientation thing. For straight people, disco was one thing; for gay people, it was another."
Disco City with Chris Burns. First Friday of the month (next regular gig is Jan. 4), 9:30 p.m.-2:30 a.m. Rock and Roll Hotel, 1353 H St. NE. Free. 202-388-7625, http://www.rockandrollhoteldc.com, http://www.myspace.com/discocitysensation.
Sunday Soir¿e with DJ Mandrill. Sundays at 6 p.m. Fab Lounge, 2022 Florida Ave. NW (second floor). $5 cover (includes rail drink ticket). 202-797-1122, http://www.thefablounge.com, http://www.djmandrill.com.
ON THE STAGE: In Boogie Shoes and More
Washington's only live disco band rehearses in what amounts to a garage in an alley.
Walk down Naylor Court between Ninth and 10th streets NW on any given Saturday afternoon, and you might hear the muffled but instantly recognizable bass line of "Disco Inferno" coming from behind the garage door.
Inside, wedged between speakers and amps, are the four members of Superflydisco. For two hours every week, they rehearse mainstream hits by Sister Sledge, Anita Ward and Donna Summer. For gigs, they dress the part: giant Afros, tight pants, shiny shirts. They are walking, jiving, flesh-and-blood, manufactured nostalgia.
The band mates have their own musical endeavors outside of Superfly (bassist Aaron "Funky Chuck" Evans, 29, is a classical violinist; drummer John Fawkes, 38, plays with a rock band; vocalist Deb¿rah Bond, 31, is working on her second progressive soul album), but they get a kitschy kick from performing in costume for people who love the music.
"The everyday folks who want to come out and party, they want to hear things they're familiar with," says Bond, who lives in Wheaton, idolizes Chaka Khan and hosts a soul show on XM Satellite Radio. "But I won't be surprised if in the next year we get thrown into something where we take it to another level. We're doing the favorites and tipping the iceberg, but I think we can really break it down and play some unexpected classics, some real deep stuff."

Ballston, Va.: Hi Gurus! How is 2007 already almost over?!
What do you guys know about the Hosiery? 443 eye st. above the auto shop. My friend went to a concert/party there last weekend and said it was the best party he's been to in DC. I can't find a website or a schedule of bands or artists or anything. I'm hesitant to just show up there some night in hopes of there being an awesome event, but I can't even find a phone number and am feeling quite out of the loop.
David: That "mystery" is what made (see below) the Hosiery so hip. No Web site, all shows advertised by word of mouth so if you're not in the loop, you're out of luck. They've had some excellent bands play there this year, like DMBQ, No Age, etc. But alas...

asian porn pisses me off, so many of the videos have the genitals blurred :sadpanda: I think I'm just looking in the wrong places.
oh that is no good.
you need to find American Asians. They are way hotter anyhow.

well it depends. I mean if you catch miko lee on a good day, then it's on, and she'll also do some fantastic ATM stuff. nonetheless I really enjoy actual asian porn. plus, with asian guys I don't feel so bad about my own genitals. whereas watching lexington steel pummel miko in UYA37 just makes me sad.

THE PARTY IS NOT CANCELLED and I never said it was. There were some issues that came up that I told you about after you asked me and these are being handled as we speak.
Things are being worked out as we speak and are looking pretty damn good. I will have a final announcement either way by tonight or tomorrow morning. Sorry to keep everyone in suspense, its just been a drama filled journey all the way with many factors that couldn't have been imagined when we put this thing together. And yes we will be open after 6am...
The Party is not canceled. At this point, we are working out some issues that came up and also looking for back up spaces in case it does not work. We will know by next tuesday everything. Sorry everyone for the thoughts of inconveniences. The party at this point can not be guaranteed either, so if you have plans to go out of town, its your own risk.
We are presently doing the best we possibly can to make sure this party happens. Like I said, we were not going to come on the board until next week at our deadline. I guess it was slipped out. Its all good though. I have enough pubes' for everyone. they may be shaven and in my trash can, but ill look for them.
oh and if anyone wants to check for misspelled words on here, they can be rest assured there are none. But that cannot be said for my grammar at this point in time either.
THINGS ARE LOOKING GOOD! =]=]=]=]=]=]=]

Hey guys,
Sorry, I haven't been on the boards in awhile... I'm not the one throwing the party, but this is what I know so far.
A Washington Post reporter did a story on the Hosiery parties that have been occurring the past few months at the venue (mentioned by Amitai), and to check her sources on her story she called the Co. that owns the building or something to that effect, which I guess differs from the person who was responsible for the lease. Well they weren't happy that nightlife parties were going on due to insurance issues. Chris Burns and Ken are working on it right now, and according to them, things look good. They said they would have a final announcement by tonight or early tomorrow morning. As soon as I know, I'll let you guys know.

:jtflassh: sorry to keep you all in limbo, but I just got word that our last option fell through and we are cancelling New Years. Several people jumped through hoops to try to keep this party alive, but ultimately the gentrifiers won and we no longer have a place to hang/party. For those of you who got to experience Gold Leaf for the parties we did have, you would have known how great New Years would have been. Due to contrary belief, these parties were safe, controlled, positive events that put no one at risk.
Unfortunately, our top was blown off by an amateaur/first time local reporter from the Washington City Paper who tipped off the building owners (who are selling the building to a developer) what was going on and we received a cease and desist letter.

I hope you guys can find other great plans. Rock N Roll Hotel and Wonderland should be fun, or goto NY to see Danny Tenaglia do one of his legendary marathon sets.
Sorry guys,

Irony from the link: http://www.washingtoncitypaper.com/display.php?id=34351
• Don’t: Invite the Press. Media coverage is a double-edged sword. While inviting nightlife photographers to snap fishbowl shots of partygoers may help glamorize your scene, additional coverage could result in overexposure. When I arrive at Gold Leaf’s party on Saturday, notebook in hand, one attendee gives me her thoughts on the media. “What the fuck are you doing! Why the fuck are you writing about this? You’re going to fucking ruin it,” she says, voice raised. “We’re living in Giuliani’s New York right now.” Later, she offers me a Schlitz and provides me with her phone number, telling me she “gives good quotes.” She never returns my calls. She’s good.
There's a lot of sad things about this situation I could point out but it's not worth the time other than saying it's a shame that this party won't go off as planned.

just got back from a week in sedona, az.....
didn't keep in touch with anyone while i was gone (which was really a nice break) - BUT, i'm pretty bummed to return to such bad news!
like i mentioned before in this thread, this wasn't my party - but i was really doing what i could to help out - the guys involved are solid dudes, it def sucks that shit got ruined by foolish bitches trying to get ahead in their careers - but oh well, i know i'm still gonna get down like it's 1999 on monday night - just don't know where yet - hehehe
merry x-mas to all the peeps i know on here - sorry i ddin't keep in touch while i was gone - sedona was soooooo beautiful that i just didn't turn on my phone or check my email the entire time i was there.
peace, love and prosperity in the new year!
