I don't think there is just one in the area. I know he doesn't get out much anymore, but I think Adagen (Travis) was one of the better breaks DJs. The whole OOB crew use to reck it.

And yes, Proxxy and Lantern kill it as well.

i hesitate to say dion, because it will only inflate his ego more and i'll have to listen to him talk about himself for 90% of every conversation, but sadly, he is my 3rd choice. he's really improved very much recently.

You don't have to produce or scratch to be a great DJ. It actually seems like, if you produce, you're not a great DJ.

Anyways, best breaks DJs in the area... (in no particular order)

Daniella Downs (Dude can get a room moving)
DJ Nysus (Live remixing)
GregJ (Not really sure if he's local :gotme:)

The only thing producing has to do with DJ'ing falls in the realm of marketing. There are many great producers out there who are crap DJs and vice versa... they are two separate skills... and scratching is only a tool that a DJ can use... just because one scratches doesn't mean they are good...

and honestly the "prove it" line is a bit of bullshit... ultimately it's going to fall to personal preference... since technical skill only counts for MAYBE 10-20% of what makes a dj good in a person's mind... there's nothing that can be done or said to "prove" that they're great...

from the DJs in the area that i've heard, that would make me come back for more:

proxxy and lantern... they always destroy, good mixing skills, top notch track selection - most of the time unreleased bits i'd kill to get a hold of, and good energy behind the decks. they've never disapointed and they always control the dancefloor and keep it rockin. to see a set of theirs is truely getting a taste of up and coming breaks mixed with a smooth combination of the current and classic heavy hitters...

nysus - again baning track selection mixing a nice blend of funky and techy goodness, his ability to scratch and drop samples over the music, and even switch up genres mid set without skipping a beat show excellent skills on the ones and twos

buster... a different style than proxxy and lantern but still great track selection and great mixing skills. when i'v eheard him its been alittle deeper than what i usually enjoy but his ability to still make me want to get down atests to being a good dj...

honorable mention (since he's not currently in the area)

daniella downs - everytime i've heard ian spin he's had me groovin with the tech nastiness. Again he drops alot of tunes no one else in the area usually has a hold of so its always going to be something new and fresh which is great... masterful on-point mixing skills, and he appears to enjoy himself behind the decks which tranfers to the dancefloor...

Also, have heard nothing but good things anout Smalls, but being i've never seen Smalls in person, i can't offer any thoughts...

he definetly slays it everytime ive ever heard him spin. I fuckig loved the 4 hour set opening night.

first time I saw him was the front room of nation, easily one of the best sets ive ever heard. As soon as he finished we walked right over to me and handed me and my friend a copy of the CD wich was basically the set he justy spun.

I agree with most of what Ed said, 'great' is a very relative term defined by the individual. Personally, I count marketing, showmanship, charisma, potential, dedication and technical skill as a package. I think all of the DJs mentioned thus far are very skilled in different aspects of the above qualities, but they definitely share a level of technical skill that sets them apart.

I have to add that Buster's funky sets are among my favorite to hear of any genre. :-)
